The Power of a Simple Gift
When Toby first showed up at Community Emergency Service in Minneapolis, he tried to make himself look presentable. In spite of his efforts, it was clear that he had been living in the same clothes for a while.
Toby’s severe addiction to alcohol, compounded by bouts of depression, made it difficult for him to hold a job. He lived in an endless cycle of rehab and relapse. He couldn’t overcome his intense cravings.
At CES Toby met Chris, who listened to his story and gently pointed him toward God. They talked for hours, and when Toby left, he had a spark of hope. He also had some food, and a blanket and toiletries that are part of Homeless Care Kits provided to CES by Here’s Life. Toby was especially touched by the toiletries. Chris explains, "It’s a dignity issue. The toiletry supplies enable a person to make himself presentable, to feel clean. It reinforces the Gospel — it says we care about the whole person."
Toby returned again and again to talk with Chris and get into the Bible. Chris helped him see God’s love for him, areas of sin in his life, and his need for redemption. Eventually Toby responded, opening his heart to the Lord.
Toby accompanied Chris when he went to Here’s Life to pick up more Homeless Care Kits. The Kits weren’t quite ready, but Toby said he didn’t mind waiting. Receiving the gift himself had made such an impact that he was eager to help others have the same opportunity.
Toby has a job now, and his own place to live. He remains sober, working steadily and growing in the Lord.
