A Robbery with a Good Result
Though raised in a Christian home, Danny never embraced God’s love for him as he was growing up. Instead, he dabbled in alcohol and then drugs.
He went to Viet Nam, and the traumas he experienced there haunted him. He developed post-traumatic stress syndrome, and his alcohol and drug addictions worsened. He couldn’t function… his family cut him off… he couldn’t hold a job.
He drifted around the country for years and eventually ended up in Denver. Danny made his home under a bridge, and he slept with one eye open so his meager belongings wouldn’t be stolen. But one night it happened… in the dead of winter, huddled under the bridge, Danny had the bag with all his possessions taken from him.
He made his way to a local mission that partners with Here’s Life in Denver. He’d heard they had food there, and — even more importantly — blankets, hats, and gloves. A guy he knew from under the bridge had frozen to death, and Danny didn’t want that to happen to him.
At the mission, Danny found hot coffee, friendly people, and the contents of a Here’s Life Homeless Care Kit. It wasn’t long before he committed his life to following Christ. Even though he was still living under the bridge, wrapped up in his blanket at night, during the day he would come to their Christian "one step" program. He learned to trust Christ to overcome his addiction to alcohol and drugs.
Once Danny’s life was stabilized, he started their employment program. He eventually got a job as an auto mechanic, and he is now self-supporting. He continues to grow in his faith, and he has been reconciled with people from his family.
