An Easter Bag Connection

Elizabeth and her four children wouldn’t normally have been in a church in New York City. They came from a different part of the world, and they’d had no exposure to Christianity.

Easter Bags, filled with sweet treats, a toy, and children’s Gospel materials, help inner-city churches connect with families. But a church in the borough of Queens had posted signs all over the neighborhood inviting children to an event where they would receive something special — an Easter Bag filled with treats. That Sunday morning, about 30 new kids showed up at the church, many brought by their parents.

Elizabeth and her four children were part of the group.

At the church, the children went to different classrooms according to their age. There were special programs in each class, and every child received an Easter Bag. Elizabeth drifted from room to room listening to what the children were hearing. The message of God’s love and forgiveness, Christ’s death and resurrection, were new to her. At the end of the time, she asked if they would be allowed to come back the following week.

After attending the Sunday School for four weeks, Elizabeth asked timidly if she could have a Bible of her own. On Father’s Day, Elizabeth’s husband came with the family. Finally, Elizabeth participated in a women’s gathering at the church, and by the end of the day she had opened her heart to the Lord. As a result, the whole family got involved in the church.

Here’s Life Inner City provides Easter Bags, filled with sweet treats, a toy, and children’s Gospel materials, to inner-city churches as a tool to help them connect with families like Elizabeth’s.

This Easter the goal is 29,000 Bags!
