Summer in the City
How long do you have to be a Christian before you can lead someone else to the Lord? For Adrianne, it was only a matter of moments.
Adrianne was a young girl attending a summer program at a neighborhood church. Here’s Life’s Summer in the City students were helping staff the program, and Adrianne saw Julie, one of the students, sharing a children’s Gospel booklet with another little girl.
"Would you read that booklet to me?" she asked.
As they read the booklet together, Adrianne revealed the devastating story of her brother’s murder. Could she really trust God? As they talked more, Julie did her best to answer her questions. In the end, Adrianne decided to ask Jesus into her heart!
Adrianne’s best friend, Juana, came over and asked what they were talking about. Adrianne eagerly asked Julie, "Can I tell her?" Together Adrianne and Julie explained the Gospel to Juana, and she, too, made the decision to receive Christ. Then all three held hands as Adrianne led Juana through a prayer of salvation.
Since 1984, Summer in the City has brought thousands of college students into the inner city to assist local ministries. They help run urban day camps, produce outreach events, do door-to-door evangelism, tutor children and teens, serve in food pantries, and minister in jails.
The impact is great not only on children like Adrianne and Juana but also on the students themselves. Many develop a deep burden for the poor and return to the inner city after graduation as teachers, social workers — and Here’s Life Inner City staff.
