Struggle, Then Victory!

A homeless man.Folks in the small church on Chicago’s south side were eager to offer Homeless Care Kits to the poor in their community — warm blankets and clothing, plus toiletries and Christian materials. The congregation advertised in the local homeless shelters and passed out fliers to homeless on the street.

They made it a special event. There was a hot lunch, small group conversation, prayer for those who wanted it, and then the distribution of the Kits Here’s Life had provided.

Peter was drawn to the church by the promise of a hot meal, a warm blanket, toiletries and a hat. He was living in abandoned buildings — imagine what that is like in Chicago in the winter! He had a wife and three children, but he had abandoned his family because of alcohol and drugs. He became so addicted that he could not work.

When Peter came to the church, he was drawn to the message and demonstration of love that he saw in the people, but the power of his addiction was too strong. He came to church the following Sunday, but then he disappeared. Periodically, when he was in need, he would come back to the church because of the connection that had been made.

During the following winter, Peter was taken seriously ill and was in the hospital. The pastor and his wife went to the hospital to pray with him, and it was then that Peter trusted his life to Christ.

As soon as he was released from the hospital, Peter started coming to church every week, learning what it means to be a Christian. Peter grew steadily; he broke away from drugs and alcohol, and he got a steady job in an auto repair shop.

Not only that, but he was reconciled with his wife and children! It was an amazing transformation, begun by the promise of a Homeless Care Kit.

Homeless Care KitsOne of our most crucial outreaches of the entire year is the annual winter campaign to share life-saving Homeless Care Kits.
