Princess Meets the Prince of Peace
She can barely read … she can hardly write her name — but she’s hungry to learn.
Princess is a pretty 9-year old who lives in the declining community of Highland Park, Michigan. There’s a lot about her life that has been hard, but one of the bright spots came during the summer. She attended a church day camp staffed by Summer in the City students.
Summer in the City is Here’s Life’s annual summer project that draws college students into the inner city to work alongside neighborhood churches and ministries. The students get intensive ministry experience, stretching their faith and overcoming their fears.
They also get the joy of meeting people like Princess.
One morning the children were talking about where they would go if they had a time machine. Princess wanted to go to the time of Adam and Eve. One of our students, John, began to tell her the story of creation, and she sat listening, enthralled. He mentioned her eagerness to Alicia, another SITC student.
Alicia reports, “I felt led by the Spirit to pull out a kids’ Gospel booklet. As soon as I did that, Princess came right up to where I was sitting. I asked her if she would like me to read it to her, and she enthusiastically replied, ‘Yes!’
“We read through the whole booklet together, and despite the many distractions in the room, Princess paid rapt attention. I asked her a few questions to see if she understood, and then asked her if she wanted Jesus to be the Lord of her heart and life. She accepted the Lord right then and there!”
At day camps, prayer stations, food pantries and anywhere else the Lord leads, Summer in the City students will be sharing the love of Christ again this summer in Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York, and Seattle.
This summer Christian college students will fan out across America for the sake of reaching inner-city children and families with the transformative Good News about God’s love.
We call it “Summer in the City.” You can sponsor them.
