The PowerPack Challenge
It was a challenge — and a little scary.
The Chicago Here’s Life team had over 300 PowerPacks available for distribution, backpacks filled with school supplies and Christian materials. The staff encouraged the teens they were working with to think of ways to use the Packs evangelistically.
Malcolm was a new believer, and he took the challenge to heart. Soon afterwards, he and some of the guys in his Bible study were outside the Here’s Life ministry center and saw a group of teens walking toward them. Malcolm knew one of the girls, Angelica; with her was her brother, Jerome.
Malcolm asked the group if they would like new backpacks filled with school supplies, and they all were eager. Malcolm added, “We’re hoping that making these backpacks available will give us opportunities to talk with people about a personal relationship with God. Would you be willing for us to talk with you?”
They were willing, so the whole group went into the Center. Malcolm distributed the booklets, Would You Like to Know God Personally? They had a great discussion as they went through the booklets, with the teens attentive and asking questions. Malcolm read through the prayer at the end of the booklet. The animated discussion continued, but there was never a clear sense of any particular commitment.
A while later, Jerome showed up at the Here’s Life ministry center for a Bible study. He told Malcolm and the others, “When we went through that booklet the day we got the backpacks, that got me interested in knowing about God. I started going to church with my aunt, and now I’ve received Christ!”
Jerome became a regular at the Bible study, and he’s brought many friends and family to events at the Center so they can learn more about the Lord.
PowerPacks — they not only carry much needed school supplies but they can also open minds and hearts to the Gospel.
