S.A.Y. Yes! for the Long Term
If you were to stop by Broadway Temple A.M.E. Zion Church on a Sunday morning, you would undoubtedly see Shavona, age 14. Outgoing and confident, she’s in the children’s choir and on the junior usher board. She seldom misses a church activity.
You might guess she’s from a strong Christian background — but your guess would be incorrect.
When Broadway Temple opened its S.A.Y. Yes! Center nearly six years ago, Shavona, then 8, was part of the inaugural group. The church’s pastor had requested names from the local school of children in greatest need, and those children were invited to attend S.A.Y. Yes! Shavona and her younger brother and sister were on the list.
When Here’s Life developed the S.A.Y. Yes! curriculum, it was for children just like Shavona.
She’s being raised by a single mom, and she has no contact with her father. Her mom tries hard to be a good parent, but she struggles. Shavona is often in the role of "mother" to her siblings.
Within the first semester of beginning S.A.Y. Yes!, including Bible club and Scripture memory, Shavona gave her life to Christ.
She has a S.A.Y. Yes! mentor, and they have developed a strong relationship even outside the Center, having special "girl times" and providing Shavona the one-on-one attention she needs. Shavona is growing strongly in her faith, and she helps younger S.A.Y. Yes! kids with their homework. Her prayers are full of faith.
God is doing wonderful things in the life of this young lady.
