Authenticity From Experience
Drug abuse… homelessness — you might not picture them on the path to leadership.
But that’s the path that Daniel took.
The Here’s Life Inner City team in Denver has always been committed to raising up and mentoring urban youth and young adults. Their goal is to develop them into powerful leaders in their churches and communities.
People from the inner city make the most effective leaders in the inner city.
In 2005, the staff led a 7-week summer leadership project for urban young adults. As they ministered in inner-city Denver, some of the youth encountered Daniel. He was at the low point of his life, and they shared the Gospel with him. It wasn’t long before Daniel gave his life to Christ.
In the months that followed, Here’s Life Denver director Hugh Brandt invested in Daniel, and the young man matured spiritually to such a degree that in 2006, he was a participant in the summer leadership program!
From the very beginning, Daniel had a penchant for soaking up Scripture and eagerly putting into practice what he was learning. And when it comes to the homeless, he has a huge heart for ministry — born of his own experience. To this day, Daniel opens his small studio apartment to men in particular need. When he speaks words of assurance — of God’s forgiveness and His power — people listen, because these truths are so real in his life.
Last spring Daniel strengthened his ministry skills even further. He was part of a team of 15 from Denver that took a mission trip to Chicago. They:
- Led an evangelistic concert at a drug rehab center and prayed with dozens of patients.
- Tutored inner-city children at an after-school center.
- Mobilized food distribution at a food depository.
- Staged a hip-hop concert — where five people indicated decisions for Christ.
- Led Bible studies for recovering addicts at a ministry center, and for senior citizens at a local YMCA.
Daniel and the others on the trip are growing in commitment, maturity and skill so they can effectively reach out to their peers and transform their communities.
