Prison Ministry

Handcuffed, facing jailThe term prison ministry usually brings to mind work done inside a prison. A chaplain, pastor or volunteer enters a prison to share the Gospel, lead Bible studies and help Christians deepen their faith in the midst of extremely difficult circumstances. This is a vital outreach.

Under the leadership of Ron Dooley, Here’s Life has a faithful contingent of staff who labor in prisons — and they are also expanding the scope of their ministry.

Many who do time in jail will return to the inner city when their sentence is complete. For those who have come to Christ while in jail, this transition time is critical. Can they connect with believers on the outside? Will the church know how to help them as they adjust to freedom?

The Prison Ministry staff of Here’s Life have developed a valuable resource for inner-city churches called Beyond Bars. Born of many years of experience, Beyond Bars helps equip the church to minister effectively to ex-offenders, recognizing unique issues they face as they begin their life on the outside.

Beyond Bars also addresses the needs of the families of prisoners. A staggering number of children and adults are directly affected when a loved one is arrested, detained and convicted of a crime. Overwhelmed by anxiety, fear and uncertainty, these families are often shoved further into crisis by economic and social deprivation. Marriages suffer severe stress.

This can be a crucial time for the local church to demonstrate God’s compassion and care, and Beyond Bars gives valuable input on how to minister effectively.

This critical tool is now available. For more information, contact: Prison.Ministry@ccci.org.
