ForwardBound: From Crisis to Careers and Christ

Joe Holland (left) explains a point about "Holistic Hardware" to a studentFrom crisis to careers and Christ — this is what ForwardBound is all about. It’s a new name at Here’s Life Inner City to identify that part of our ministry that equips and trains churches with practical life skills and career development resources for people at risk.

Roberto moved eleven times from one foster home to another as a child. A victim of abuse, he grew up very angry. Never feeling loved, he turned to drugs. Eventually, he was homeless.

One day, he learned about a shelter in Harlem run by Joseph Holland (above left), a Christian lawyer. There Roberto found love and acceptance. Joe taught Roberto ten biblically-based tools for practical living called Holistic Hardware that led him out of his crisis into a productive life. Most importantly, he discovered a new relationship with Jesus Christ. Today, this formerly homeless man is happily married, working full-time, and giving back to his community through his church. Roberto has been transformed.

You can meet Joseph Holland and Roberto on the soon-to-be released DVD version of Holistic Hardware. With a vision to capture what Joe so successfully developed in Harlem to make it available for inner-city ministries across the country, Here’s Life originally co-produced this life-changing series eight years ago on VHS. Using lecture, drama, and testimonies, it focuses on ten key areas of productive living, including Vision, Responsibility, Planning, Work, and Self-Esteem. Complete with a leader’s guide and student worksheets, Holistic Hardware has proven effective with teens and adults in prisons, rehab centers, juvenile homes and court-mandated anger management classes, among others.

WorkNet class in Little Rock, ArkansasOnce out of crisis, it’s time to help someone find a job — but not just any job. Help people discover work they can do today in a field of interest they love that leads them to a future dream job. Then they advance to become economically self-sufficient and break the cycle of poverty. That’s the philosophy of WorkNet.

People with barriers appear difficult to place in the workforce, but "No One Is Unemployable," writes bestseller co-author Elisabeth Harney, President of WorkNet Solutions, who wrote and developed this outstanding and highly successful career development model for the at-risk. In student-journal or fast-track form, this highly interactive and creative curriculum teaches difficult-to-place candidates how to create a career path to a job of their dreams, how to overcome barriers to employment and identify solutions, how to develop a job search strategy, and trains them in the marketing skills necessary to obtain meaningful employment.

Here’s an exciting way to get started! WorkNet’s Fast Tracks equip you to offer a career exploration workshop. Help people answer these questions: What do I want from a job? How do I start a career, not just get a job? How do I get from where I am to my dreams?

Then come get trained to learn how to use the entire model. Several times a year, Here’s Life Inner City offers training to our partner ministries.
